Lamentations Tours in Pekiin

The Hebrew month of Elul is the month of Lamentations, which is abundant with mystical and religious significance, and invites the individual to an accounting between himself and God and between himself and his fellow man. In Pekiin in the Western Galilee, which carries a historical heritage of thousands of years, in which members of four religions live in harmony – Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze – you are invited to a tour of prayers, ancient stories and an introduction to the joint traditions of all the religions. In order to experience the special atmosphere of Lamentations in this picturesque village, there is a joint philanthropic project between “Treasures of the Galilee” and “Zinati House” – the Centre for Heritage of the Jews of Pekiin, pf the Zionist Council – dramatized, experiential Lamentations tours at night suitable for all the family, accompanied by oil lamps.

The tour focuses on the story of Pekiin, throughout history, and passes between the alleyways of the village and places in which the past meets the present – in a village in which there was Jewish settlement, without a break, for over 2,000 years and at present only several Jewish families live there.

The tour will pass through, amongst others, the cave in which Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and his son Elazar hid for 13 years, and a visit to the Visitors Centre where you will hear the fascinating story of the Jewish Zinati family in Pekiin, who have never left and continued to live a Jewish life in the Land of Israel even in years when the Jewish people were expelled from their country.  The highlight of the tour – a thrilling meeting with the Jewish holder of the fort in Pekiin, Margalit Zinati, aged 86 and a Lamentations performance in the ancient synagogue.
