The Montfort is a Crusaders Castle built in the 13th century by the German Teutonic Order- most likely based on fortified remains from the Roman period. The castle was destroyed during that same century by the adventurous Mameluk sultan Baibars. The meaning of the word Montfort in French is: the Strong Mountain.

The exact second the fortress is revealed to viewers on the mountainside across the Kziv Stream creek, will remain in their memories forever. The sight will keep them occupied for quiet sometime as they stand on the steps of the small amphitheater at the Montfort Observation Point at Goren Park and watch in amazement. The deep green and the great blue setting simply take one’s breath away (this is also a good place to assemble a group or a family for an explanation, a salutation or a ceremony). Visitors will immediately notice that beyond the exciting sight and the imaginary suspension bridge they wish they could stretch to the castle right then and there – their hearing is more acute than usual; suddenly they can hear water gently trickling somewhere deep in the gorge below, the wind blowing among the Plane-tree leaves, the croaking of an invisible tree frog or the call of a bird of prey soaring above.
The Montfort Observation Point is located adjacent to the camping grounds, which can be reached after a few minutes’ drive on the winding road running through the Goren Park -2,000 Dunam (as494 acres) of natural Mediterranean grove. At Goren Park visitors can enjoy a variety of different walking trails:
The Scenic Route- 8 km (shy of 5 miles) long; begins at the park’s entrance. The trail encircles the park alongside the Kziv Stream cliffs. It can be followed on foot or in a loop-trail by car.
The Sinkholes Trail- a short loop-trail about 500 m (as 546 yard) long encompassing a cluster of sinkholes created by the solution of rocks by rain. The trail begins about 300 m (as 328 yards) after the park entrance, on the right side of the road.
Cross Park Trail – a linear-trail that begins about 500 m (as 546 yard) south of the park entrance. The trail crosses the park and ends after about 1.5 km (as0.93 mile) at the Montfort Observation Point.
From the Observation Point one can descend to the Kziv Stream Reserve, to Ein Tamir (Tamir Spring) (follow the waterway upstream to a huge white rock-bed studded with pools, gullies and one narrow cave. Follow the signs. One cannot miss it) and of course to the Montfort castle (adhere to the red signs: a steep yet worthwhile ascent and descent). Inside the park itself, travelers can find an organized picnic site that includes picnic tables and water fountains, and facilitates tent camping as well (only in the area of the Observation Point).
To reach the park – follow road 899 eastward. After Kibbutz Eilon and before Moshav Goren follow the signs pointing right to the park.
